The Building

Carlotta was NOT named after the transgender star of the Les Girls Cabaret show. The history goes back much further to the 1860s when an estate with a substantial house and a large orchard was built for Charlotte Gore on what is now the corner of Carlotta and Clarendon Streets. The house was named “Carlotta” after Charlotte, and occupied by Richard Sheldon when he moved to Artarmon following the death of his first wife. As Mayor of Willoughby he lobbied hard for the development of the North Sydney Tramway System and a bridge across the harbour. He was also the licensee of the Hope and Anchor Inn on the corner of Druitt and Sussex Streets and fathered a total of 8 children. He is most famous probably, for dying mid-sentence. As the Sydney Morning Herald reported, “he expired suddenly while speaking at a public dinner”

The building was once the warehouse to Australian Icon Dick Smith’s Australian Food empire until it was taken over in the early 1980s by one of the most colorful characters of the Australian animation industry, Zoran Janic. The building was converted into ZAP Productions, Australia’s first visual effects and computer graphics film studio, and for 20 years ZAP became Sydney’s infamously animated epicentre of TV commercial production. Zoran sold the studio in 2003 to Stephen Hall who turned it into the Tabletop Studio “Carnival Films”. In 2013 Carnival was sold to a large media company who occupied the building until 2017.

In January 2018, after extensive renovations, Stephen Hall and Daniel Nortje reopened the building as Carlotta Studios with the aim to make it the most functional, user friendly, fully integrated and diverse studio complex in Sydney. And with the vision it will once again regain its place of fame as a vibrant epicentre of visual creation.
